Task

This project presented a unique opportunity to meet the needs of two distinct clients through one innovative partnership. Filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin sought a geographically accurate and visually compelling way to showcase Honnold’s ascent of El Capitan. Meanwhile, Google aimed to showcase their groundbreaking high-resolution Google Earth imagery to new audiences.

Our Approach & Solution

Acting as the critical link between creative vision and cutting-edge technology, we collaborated closely with the filmmakers to identify Google Earth as the ideal platform. After securing Google’s approval, we coordinated between the film team and Google’s engineering and product groups. The result was a groundbreaking use case of Google Earth that provided audiences with an immersive, vivid perspective on Honnold’s rope-free climb up one of the world’s most legendary rock faces.

Impact & Results

The integration enriched the storytelling of the Oscar-winning documentary, enhancing viewers’ understanding of the physical and technical challenges of El Capitan. The collaboration not only elevated the film’s visual narrative but also showcased Google Earth’s powerful potential in cinematic storytelling, reaching audiences far beyond traditional tech users.
