Task

Having previously done a deep dive into the world of scams in 2019, Google identified a growing wave of gift card grifts on the horizon for 2021. According to the FTC, nearly one in four fraud victims reported paying scammers with gift cards, resulting in losses of nearly $245 million since 2018, with an average loss of $840 per victim. Our task was to simplify complex scam tactics into clear, relatable messages that would drive measurable behavioral change, especially among older, more vulnerable audiences.

Our Approach & Solution

In collaboration with Mischief @ NFA, DVMC, and Digilant, we created the “Unbelievable Stories” campaign—a series of hyperbolic dramatizations inspired by real scam scenarios. By amplifying the absurdity scammers use to fool victims, we delivered a crystal-clear message: if someone asks you to solve a problem with a gift card, it’s a scam.

We designed this campaign for generational interplay, encouraging conversations across age groups while providing PR-ready assets and content engineered for outsized talk value on social and beyond.

Impact & Results

The campaign effectively raised awareness, sparked cross-generational conversations, and empowered audiences to recognize and avoid gift card scams—helping Google reinforce its role as a trusted advocate in online safety.
